  • Spirit - Spirit of 76 - 1975. They had broken up, Jay Ferguson and the Bassist Mark Andres left and formed Jo Jo Gunne. Randy California split to Hawaii, his Father In Law/Drummer Ed Cassidy got a bunch of kids to form a new Spirit. Needless to say that didn’t work. It didn’t disintegrate his relationship with Randy and Ed convinced Randy to come to Florida and start playing again as a three piece. They did some recording in a studio in Tampa and I don’t think it was meant for release, it has a real loose vibe. There is a bunch of talking and messing with the tape recorder and reverb that everyone has ever done if they are messing with a reverb unit. Anyway their manager just cobbled together the tapes and played them for someone at Mercury Records. And Voila! In between the nonsense and jam bits are some brilliant covers and a choice few originals which are some of California & Cassidy’s best writing. The album opens with a medley of America the Beautiful & The Times They Are A-Changing that is absolutely brilliant. Victim Of Society follows and is a pop classic, but through a psychedelic filter. Joker on the Run opens with California asking for the air conditioning to be turned up and announcing the next song is a Byrds/Hendrix hybrid and that pretty much nails it. A lot of tips of that hat to Hendrix here, (factoid: Randy was in Hendrix’s Blue Flames band, which had two Randy’s one from California and one from Texas, Randy California, he became) Dylan and the Stones as well, a great trippy version of Happy. A phase shifted to the max version of Like a Rolling Stone. This one is a hard find, hell, it was a hard find in 1975. Completely undeservedly overlooked. It sounds kind of scattered and messy, in fact in sounds like the artwork on jacket. But this gets it’s hooks in you. Seek it out. Factoid two: Page stole Taurus from the first Spirit album and turned it into Stairway. Randy never really cared but after he died in 97 his estate sure cared. They sued, they lost. Led Zep opened for Spirit and even did a cover of Fresh Garbage from the first album. #spirit #randycalifornia #spiritof76 #edcassidy #mercuryrecords #jimihendrix #vinylrules #70s
