  • Some people have a difficult time grasping the concept of mindfulness initially. They aren& #039 ;t sure exactly what it is or what they should do. This picture is a fantastic visual of the concept of mindfulness. No special tools, no need to be a specific place, just being present, wherever you happen to be.

  • Sometimes we lose the moment. Perhaps it’s to our fears or our pain or our mental analysis of the past or future. Maybe it’s a general sense of not being connected to ourselves or anything...a foggy, removed state. Whatever the reasons we may have lost our union with the present moment, grounding exercises can help bring us back to the now. This moment is really all we have to work with or handle and it is enough. Here are a couple of grounding exercises I find helpful. 1). Stand or sit with bare feet firmly planted on the ground, whether outside or inside and your hands relaxed by your side. If needed, Google pictures of “mountain pose,” a yoga posture that facilitates grounding into ourselves and the earth. As you feel your feet firmly rooted, notice your breathing and then focus your awareness on the sensation of your feet fully engaged with the floor or the earth. Notice your posture and your breathing. You might even imagine roots connecting your feet to this place. Bring your full awareness to being in this space and the firm connection with the ground. 2). “5-4-3-2-1”-You can do this wherever you are to come back to the moment. -Notice 5 things you can see around you. -Notice 4 things you can feel or touch. -Notice 3 things you can hear.
-Notice 2 things you can smell (This will take even more present focus).
-Lastly, Notice 1 thing you can taste. Perhaps keep some chocolate or a piece of fruit by you, take a bite, and allow yourself to experience the fullness of the flavor and the experience of eating. Notice how you feel and the focus of your attention after these grounding exercises. Repeat as needed. I hope your Monday is going well! 💜🍃🌳 #grounding #dissociation #stress #anxiety #depression #trauma #ptsd #selfcare #counseling #psychotherapy #socialworker #socialwork
