  • I’ve been on a plant based diet for the past 10 days for cultural reasons. I had to make a conscious effort to think about and include protein sources at every meal. This smashed avocado on rye toast, topped with mung sprouts was a total hit. ———————————
    Proteins and their constituent amino acids are essential for body functions. 40% of proteins are found in skeletal muscles, 25% in body organs and the balance in hair, skin, nails and blood. ———————————
    Describing the functional role of proteins would take up a whole book but in short our digestive enzymes, hormones, antibodies, immunoglobulins (for immune protection), neuropeptides (for the nervous system) and transport proteins (haemoglobin) are few examples of protein cells in the body. ———————————
    To ensure the body’s protein requirements are met, consuming a variety of proteins is essential to obtain the essential and non essential amino acids.
