Waiting for my next set of evacuees to sort out onto the right train. 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Over 17,000 women from the #wvs were directly involved in the evacuation of women and children from London, starting on the 1st Sept 1939...the day Germany invaded Poland. Over 3 days 1.5 million evacuees were sent to rural locations. A logistical nightmare and yet something that was still accomplished in such short time and by mostly volunteers.
3 waves of evacuations occured over the next 5 years and my hat goes off to not only those who helped organise it, but also those families who recieved them and to the families and children who would be seperated by #ww2
The things we can achieve by pulling together when freedom is threatened I hope inspire the things we could achieve in times of peace.
